Update

Okay, I admit it’s been an age since I blogged. I have reasons (read: excuses), but they don’t really matter. I’m back and I’m writing!
A lot has been happening since my last post!
  • I gave myself a wicked case of writer’s block, then kicked it.
  • I moved to a new house – it’s right across the parking lot from the last house, but that doesn’t mean the move was any less hideous.
  • I went on the Atkins diet, lost a ton of weight, but had to quit it. Who knew Atkins wasn’t so good for depression?
  • I have a new godson! Connor is just as perfect as his brother, Marcus, and I couldn’t be prouder of them.
  • Pele is growing up – she’s almost two now – and Morgana and Luna continue to be beautiful and sweet.
  • I'm back at pottery class, which means my sanity is returning!
  • I visited a few new cities: Niagara Falls, Gatlinburg, Atlanta, and Chattanooga.
  • I turned 40!

Niagara Falls
Yep, that's a lot of water.

Bravery, Feline Style

Today, I’m inspired by my cats. Less than a week ago, we adopted a new kitten, Pele. She’s been bunking in her daddy’s office while the big girls, Morgana and Luna, get used to the new addition. Tonight, they finally met face to face. Or rather, the baby hung out in the carrier while the other two stalked around to observe (and hiss at) her.
Do you know what Pele did? She scrambled to the front of the carrier and scratched to be let out so she could play with them. We didn’t name her after a fire goddess for nothing! She’s absolutely fearless, as displayed by this incident as well as this morning’s antics: she climbed all the way to the top of her cat tower for the first time despite being unable to climb back down. Sure, she had to ask for help in returning to the ground, but it won’t deter her from doing it again!

"Daddy, I climbed all the way up here, but how do I get down meow???"

And let’s not forget Morgana and Luna, who came to check out - then lay down next to - this new alien addition to our home even though they certainly had misgivings. I don’t always deal with inevitable changes in my life nearly as well as these little 6-pound (and tiny 1.8 pound) balls of fluff are doing! You can either rise to the challenge and climb to the top of your tower (even if you don’t know what to do next) or you can hide under the bed… figuratively speaking.

X - Day 24 of the A to Z Challenge

I’ve been working on the A to Z blogging challenge this month, writing a blog post nearly every day, covering a topic for each letter of the alphabet by the end of the month. Here I am on day 24, the day for my X post. And you know what? I got nothin'! No idea whatsoever of what to write for X.
So… here’s some adorable pictures of my cats! Enjoy!

What Do Cats Think About?

Tierra, the main character in Practically Dreaming, is an animal psychic. In writing her character, I found that I not only had to understand what motivated her, but what the animals around her wanted as well. What exactly does a cat think about?

Tierra’s cat is named Solaris, a spoiled orange ball of fluff. In my mind, I pictured him as something like a Maine Coon or a Norwegian Forest Cat. As for his personality, it is an amalgamation of many of the cats in my life.

My cats do some odd things sometimes, which just defy explanation. For example, what is the deal when a cat can go from serene to insane in about half a second? They’ll be sitting all chilled out, then the eyes go wide and they sprint from the room with the speed of light. I don’t even know if an animal psychic would be able to define that behavior!

As to the question of what cats think about when they're not sprinting about like mad creatures…I think it’s mostly sunbeams, food, sleep, and being petted. At least, that’s the way I wrote about Solaris, who always seemed to be searching out a warm place to sleep, but only after his belly was full. Here’s a little snippet from the book:

An itch on Tierra’s nose pulled her from the depths of sleep. She reached a drowsy hand up to brush something off her nose, only to be rewarded with the tickling sensation again a moment later. Finally, giving up on the idea of continued sleep, she opened her eyes. Solaris leapt up onto her chest, his solid weight squeezing an “ooof” of discomfort from her. He spun around in a circle, kneading his paws on her chest through the comforter. His fluffy bristle brush of a tail swept across her face, telling her all she needed to know about the tickle that awoke her.
            “Sol, really?”
The cat swatted his tail defiantly at Tierra’s face once more, surely a punishment for his nickname, which he hated. Intent on his goal, his disposition turned sweet again as he turned on his adorable charm. He spun around so he was face to face with his human, stared insistently into her eyes, and meowed. The supplication came with a clear vision of his food dish overflowing with tuna. He even sent her the image of the red label on the can. It was the premium tuna, not the cat food can. Nothing but the best for Solaris, or so he believed. He followed up his request with a more strident meow.
Tierra loved the sounds he made, from the strong, motorboat purr to the chirping, burring sounds he made when he was happy. Her favorite was his meow. It reminded her more of a rusty gate than a proper meow. Instead of “meow” or “rowr,” the cat said something sounding more like “meh-eh.” She thought it was adorable, and Solaris knew it, too. It begged the question of who exactly was in charge here; who owned who? Tierra preferred not to ponder that question for too long.

Read more about Practically Dreaming tomorrow when I write about what dogs think! And for more about the book, you can check it out here.

Saying Goodbye this Halloween

Halloween is more than costumes and candy. Wiccans view Samhain (Halloween) as the end of the witch’s year, and a new year is always a good time to start fresh and let go of the past. It’s also considered the date when the veil between this world and the next is the thinnest. In other cultures, Day of the Dead is celebrated on November 1, and it’s a time for honoring family members no longer with us.

So this Halloween I will be saying goodbye to my beloved Josephine, a cat who has been with me for more than 15 years. She passed away in her sleep Friday night. Although she had been receiving treatment for a variety of age-related diseases, it was a shock for my husband and I to lose her so suddenly. Up until the end, she remained a happy, playful, sweet girl.

She loved a warm sunbeam, her catnip-stuffed mouse toys, and bites of pork from an order of pad Thai. Christmas was her favorite time of year – “helping” wrap presents and laying under the tree. I’ll never forget her meeting her younger sisters for the first time with an authoritative hiss and swat, always the head cat in our house! Everyone who met her loved her (even her be-swatted sisters), and she loved to greet new people, more than happy to apply cat hair to their legs, coats, or purses.

Today I thought I heard her singing - she had this special meow she used when she was playing with her favorite toys. It didn’t strike me at first that the sound was out of place, but then I remembered. I hope it wasn’t wishful “hearing.” I would like to think it was her way of letting me know she was okay before moving on.

It’s heartbreaking to say goodbye to her. But I see her in my mind in the Summerland, soaking up the sun with her older sister, Madison, and… well, to be honest, I’m not entirely comforted. I’ll probably go through a ton more tissues and I’ll mistake every black shadow or dark piece of clothing as her for quite some time. But I do know it’ll get easier eventually. I was lucky to have so much time with her and so many happy memories.

Love you, Jo.

Hurricane Preparedness

We’ve made it through the latest hurricane with minimal damage – maybe a tiny leak in the window – but no power outages and no flooding or anything truly bad. We got lucky. Yes, we live inland, but many of our local friends have been without power for a day now, not to mention the reports I’m hearing of trees falling on houses, cars, fences… And that’s just here in Northern Virginia. I feel awful for those people in the hard hit areas of Virginia, New Jersey, New York, and everyone else in the path of the storm.

Certainly, we didn’t do well in this storm because of any decent level of preparedness on my part. Here’s what my hurricane kit looked like:

Let me give you a run-down on it.
  • Water – This was John’s contribution, likely the most useful item here if we actually had lost power.
  • Flashlight – Necessary if I want to read my…
  • Kindle – When in doubt, read.
  • Candle and lighter – Yankee Cozy Cabin scent.
  • Settlers of Catan – An excellent board game that can be played by fall-fragranced candlelight in the event of a power outage.
  • Rum – For when we truly get bored.
  • Cat laser – For when the cats get bored.
Yes, I know. Pathetic. But you gotta think about cat entertainment when a massive hurricane is headed in your direction! What non-essential things made it to your hurricane kit this week?

The Cat Who Hates Me

I’m a cat person. Some of my friends even jokingly call me the Cat Whisperer because I pretty much get along with all of them. I love cats and they love me… mostly.

My dad’s cat, Katie, does NOT love me. She hates me. With a passion. Now to be fair, she pretty much hates everyone with the exception of my dad. She tolerates my mom, but probably only because Mom feeds her.

Katie - Can't you just see the disdain for me on her face?

It still kills me though, every time I visit them, I try to play with her, try to feed her, try to pet her, all with no joy. If I get within two feet of her cat tree, she starts to growl! If I get too close, she swats me.

As for my dad, he gets along with most any animal, especially, of course, his rotten cat. My cat, Luna, however, doesn’t like him very much… but he has been known to spit gum at her occasionally… don’t ask!

Luna - The epitome of cute.

It occurred to me today that cats and readers have something in common. Not that they growl and swat me! But because what works for one person doesn’t necessarily work for another person… or cat. How many people love love love 50 Shades of Grey? Yeah, soooo not me. But I adore The Stand by Stephen King and I’ve found quite a few scathing reviews of it that I completely disagree with. Taste – and the love of a cat apparently – is subjective.

So the next time I get a less-than-glowing review, I’ll try to keep Luna and Katie in mind. And I’ll do my best not to growl at the reviewer.

O is for Omens and Superstitions - A to Z Challenge

Damien from the Omen is just plain creepy!

When I say omen, what is the first thing you think of? Damian… right. Okay, what’s the second thing?

For me it’s black cats. The superstition about black cats being bad luck is probably one of the most commonly known ones. But did you know there are many other omens and superstitions about cats?

As a matter of fact, black cats being unlucky if they cross your path is an American superstition. In Europe, they’re considered good luck. But if you meet any kind of cat immediately upon leaving the house in the morning, you’ll have bad luck.

Cats can predict weather too. Expect rain if a cat sneezes. If a cat is restless, expect a storm. Cats sleeping with their backs turned to the fire foretell cold weather.

Don’t know whether to accept a marriage proposal? There’s a way to use cat hair to decide. On a wedding day, a black cat crossing the path of a bride or sneezing near a bride is good luck.

Josephine, our oldest. We also have a grey cat and a
white cat. No matter what I wear, I'm covered in cat hair!
Of course, I don’t actually believe any of these superstitions. But I’ll add a couple adages here that we’d like to believe are true in this house (because they’re unavoidable anyway):

*Cat hair makes everything taste better.

*An outfit isn’t complete without cat hair.

What are you superstitious about?
